SERIES| East

EAST is a personal reflection on the coastline I’ve come to call home. After more than a decade living in Sydney, places like Bondi Beach and Bronte Beach have become part of my everyday, familiar, shared spaces shaped by the people who move through them as much as the landscape itself.

This series takes locations that are widely photographed and globally recognised, and reinterprets them through tufting, an unfamiliar, tactile medium that allows me to “draw” with yarn. By translating these scenes into soft, textural surfaces, I’m not trying to replicate them exactly, but instead capture how they feel to experience: the light, the colour, the atmosphere, and the rhythm of the ocean.

EAST is about slowing these places down and seeing them differently. It’s about turning something iconic into something intimate, bringing attention back to the beauty that exists right here, on our doorstep, in a backyard shared with people from all over the world.

EAST #1| Fluffy Icebergs

Fluffy Icebergs presents a textural interpretation of Bondi Icebergs, extending across the coastline toward the northern headlands off Bondi Beach. Executed using a long-pile tufting technique, the work leans into softness and material presence, dissolving fine detail in favour of a plush, immersive surface. The composition balances saturated oceanic blues and greens against a striking red sky, evoking the warmth and intensity of a summer dawn. The result is a tactile, atmospheric rendering that elevates a recognisable landmark into a bold, contemporary statement.

EAST #2| Bird’s Eye Bronte

Bird’s Eye Bronte offers a condensed, aerial perspective of Bronte Beach, translating the geometry of the ocean pool and its surrounds into a layered textile form. A deliberate interplay of short and long pile tufting techniques creates a heightened sense of depth, distinguishing water from land through both colour and physical elevation. Cool blues contrast with the muted greys of concrete and deep greens of coastal vegetation, resulting in a composition that feels both graphic and dimensional. Despite its smaller scale, the work carries a strong visual impact, functioning as a refined study of place, texture, and structure.

Size - 107cm X 66cm

EAST #3| Sunset Swims

In Sunset Swims, the perspective opens outward from Bondi Beach, capturing the expanse of ocean, pool, and horizon at dusk. This large-scale work explores the interplay between colour and light, where soft pink skies meet deep blue waters in a moment of transition. The integration of both long and short pile tufting introduces a subtle hierarchy of depth, drawing the viewer through the composition from foreground to distance. Textural detailing within the breaking waves adds movement and energy, anchoring the piece in the physicality of the coastline while maintaining a refined, contemporary finish.

Size - 166cm X 117cm
